What to have ready
- Countries and years. Where you lived, worked and held accounts or property, and the tax years involved.
- Your status. Citizen, green card holder, visa type, Canadian PR or citizen, NRI, OCI or PIO.
- Business details if you own or run a company: where it is registered, who owns it and what it files.
- Notices. Any letter from the IRS, the CRA, an Indian tax authority or the Illinois Department of Revenue, with its code and the response date. Dates are the most urgent item.
- Foreign accounts and assets: banks, funds, retirement plans, property and the highest balances if you know them.
What happens after you call
- First conversation. We hear your situation across the countries involved and answer your first questions.
- Written engagement. If we are a fit, you receive an agreement describing the scope, what you provide and the fee. Nothing starts until it is signed.
- Preparation and filing. We gather documents, prepare the filings, coordinate with your Canadian and Indian advisers, walk you through the result and file.
A first call does not make you a client. Details are in our policies and disclosures.
Not sure where to start?
- Moving between countries: the India to U.S. checklist and the U.S. to India checklist.
- Foreign accounts: FBAR step by step and Form 8938.
- A letter arrived: IRS notices: first steps.
- Starting a business: start a business in Illinois.
