India Tax and Compliance Guides

NRI residency, ITR filing, FEMA and remittance rules, Indian company and GST compliance and the Income-tax Act 2025 transition, explained for people with U.S. or Canada ties.

India's tax and exchange-control rules matter to anyone with Indian roots who lives abroad: an NRI selling a flat in Pune, a returning resident closing an NRO account, a founder in Bengaluru with U.S. investors, a family moving money to pay for a parent's care. The rules are administered by two separate systems (income tax and foreign exchange under FEMA) and, since the Income-tax Act, 2025 replaced the 1961 Act for tax years starting April 1, 2026, a third thing to track is which version of the law applies to which year.

These guides explain how the Indian system works for people connected to the United States or Canada: residency tests, what is taxable, TDS on property sales, Forms 15CA and 15CB, NRE, NRO and FCNR accounts, the Liberalised Remittance Scheme, filing steps on the e-filing portal, and compliance for companies, LLPs and GST registrants. Each page ends with the U.S. and Canadian side of the same topic.

Indian filings are made by you or your Chartered Accountant in India. We are a U.S. CPA firm: we handle the U.S. side and coordinate with your CA so the filings agree. For the U.S. side, see the USA guides, and for combined situations the US-India cross-border guides.
