Tax Notices, Penalties and Disputes: IRS, CRA and India

What to do when the IRS, the CRA or the Indian Income Tax Department sends a notice: deadlines, penalties, payment plans, appeals, voluntary disclosure and scam checks.

A tax notice is a deadline in an envelope. Most can be answered with a short reply, a payment or a correction, but each tax authority gives a limited time to respond or appeal, and the rights you lose by waiting are not always recoverable. The three systems also communicate differently: the IRS writes first by mail, the CRA posts many notices to My Account, and Indian notices arrive through the e-filing portal and registered email.

This section explains, country by country, how to read what you received, what the response deadline is, how penalties and interest work, how to ask for relief, how to appeal and how to pay over time. Start with the response checklist if you are not sure where to begin, and read the scam alerts before you pay anything.
