India Unusual Volume Stocks: Bulk Deals and Surveillance

India unusual volume stocks explained: bulk and block deal disclosure, rumour verification, NSE surveillance lists and how intraday trades are taxed.

Updated October 23, 2026 · 5 min read

India unusual volume stocks are NSE and BSE securities trading far more shares than their own recent average. India gives readers more public clues about a spike than many markets do: large trades are disclosed after the close, the biggest listed companies must verify market rumours when their price moves sharply, and exchanges publish surveillance lists. This page explains where those clues are and how intraday trading is treated under the Income-tax Act, 2025, with notes for NRIs and for U.S. and Canadian taxpayers.

What are India unusual volume stocks?

The screener below flags stocks and ETFs on Indian exchanges with volume far above their own averages. Unlike the India most active list, which ranks raw share counts, this list highlights surprise. Data is delayed in most cases.

Where the clues are

ClueWhat the rule says
Bulk dealsA bulk deal is all transactions in a scrip where the quantity bought or sold exceeds 0.5% of the company's listed equity shares, reached through one or more trades in the normal market. Brokers disclose immediately, and exchanges publish on the same day after market hours
Block dealsExecuted in two windows (8:45 to 9:00 a.m. and 2:05 to 2:20 p.m.), with orders within 1% of the reference price, a minimum order size of Rs 10 crore and delivery required, so no square-off
Rumour verificationSEBI's circular of May 21, 2024 requires a listed entity to verify market rumours upon material price movement; it applies to the top 100 entities from June 1, 2024 and to the top 250 from December 1, 2024
Surveillance listsStocks whose prices look inconsistent with fundamentals can be placed under NSE's Graded Surveillance Measure, with trade-for-trade settlement, deposits, once-a-week trading or price freezes
Listing dayNew IPO scrips start with a call auction; issues up to Rs 250 crore have a 5% price band and trade in the trade-for-trade segment for the first 10 days, while larger issues have a 20% band

A big name on a bulk or block deal list tells you someone traded size; it does not say whether the person was buying or selling for good reasons, and it is not a signal. SEBI and NSE make the lists public precisely so that retail investors are not guessing.

A five-minute check of a spike

  1. Compare the volume with the 20-day or 50-day average on your broker's chart.
  2. Check the day's bulk and block deal reports on the exchange website after the close.
  3. Look for corporate announcements and the company's reply to any exchange query on price or volume movement.
  4. Check whether the security is on a surveillance list or has a new price band.
  5. If the spike appears only in a small-cap with heavy social media chatter, treat it with caution and see our scam alerts.

Is intraday trading taxed differently?

The Income-tax Act, 2025 defines a speculative transaction as one in which a contract to buy or sell a commodity, including stocks and shares, is settled otherwise than by actual delivery. Speculative business income and its losses follow separate rules, and the Act's loss chapter says a loss from a speculation business is dealt with separately from capital losses. Delivery-based sales of listed shares by an investor are generally capital gains instead, at the rates in the India 52-week highs guide, although frequent traders can be treated as carrying on a business. Keep contract notes, and let your Chartered Accountant (CA) decide classification. Your income statements on the portal, including the annual information statement, should match your broker's reports; see AIS and Form 26AS.

Frequently asked questions

What is a bulk deal?

It is any day's total buying or selling in a scrip above 0.5% of the company's listed equity shares, disclosed by brokers and published after the market closes.

What is a block deal?

A large single trade of at least Rs 10 crore executed in a separate window, with delivery required.

Does unusual volume mean there is an announcement?

Not always. The company may have nothing pending, and the exchange may ask it to clarify. Check the exchange's corporate announcements.

Are intraday trades capital gains?

Not under the Act's definition if they are settled without delivery; they are speculative transactions. Confirm with your CA.

Do NRIs need to file anything about trading?

NRIs report taxable income in an Indian return, and U.S. or Canadian residents also report the accounts in their own countries.
