Where Is My Tax Refund? How to Check in the US, Canada and India

Where is my tax refund? Check status with the IRS, Illinois, the CRA and India's e-filing portal: what each needs and the official timing as of October 2026.

October 24, 2026 · 5 min read

Where is my tax refund? In the United States, use the IRS Where's My Refund? tool. In Canada, sign in to your CRA account. In India, use the e-filing portal once the return is e-verified. As of October 2026 all three publish target times, not promised dates, and a bank account in the wrong country can delay a refund.

How do you check a refund in the United States?

  1. Enter your SSN or ITIN, filing status and the refund from your return in whole dollars, not a software estimate. The tool updates once a day, usually overnight.
  2. Read the stage: Return Received has no date, Refund Approved shows your date, and Refund Sent shows when the money left or the check was mailed.
  3. Call only if the tool tells you to. A transcript shows no refund date.

Earned income credit and additional child tax credit claims cannot be paid before mid-February by law. Mailed returns take 6 weeks or more. Illinois updates each business day and says about 4 weeks for e-file with direct deposit and 8 or more on paper.

Direct deposit. Give routing and account numbers. Form 8888 splits a refund among up to 3 accounts, and one account takes at most 3 refunds. Rejected bank details freeze the refund; a CP53E notice then gives 30 days to add an account online or claim an exception, and otherwise a paper check follows after about 6 weeks.

Amended returns. Where's My Amended Return? works about 3 weeks after you file Form 1040-X. Allow 8 to 12 weeks, and up to 16. Canada and India work differently; see amended returns by country.

How do you check a refund in Canada?

Your CRA account shows status, the refund amount and the notice of assessment (see the T1 guide). The CRA's pages do not agree, so here is who says what:

  • The tax refunds page: e-filed within 2 weeks, non-resident or international within 16 weeks, no paper figure.
  • The processing-times page: 95% of T1 returns in 4 weeks if e-filed and 8 weeks if on paper.
  • A February 2026 CRA tax tip: notice of assessment within 2 weeks online and 12 weeks on paper.

All apply only to returns received by the due date; late-filed returns have no firm target. After 12 weeks without an assessment, check the status in your account.

The refund goes to the bank details on file, or a cheque is mailed to the address on file. Only Canadian bank or credit-union accounts qualify, and online changes take effect the next business day. Non-residents in countries that do not accept Canadian cheques can ask for a wire.

How do you check a refund in India?

  1. E-verify within 30 days of filing. Later verification counts as the filing date, and a return never verified is invalid.
  2. Check status under e-File, Income Tax Returns, View Filed Returns.
  3. Pre-validate the bank account, since the refund goes only to such an account.

The portal lists failure causes: PAN not linked to Aadhaar, an account not pre-validated, a name mismatch, a wrong IFSC code or a closed account. See the NRI ITR filing guide.

A worked example (invented numbers)

Meera lives in Aurora and keeps an NRO account in Pune. On February 10, 2026 she e-files her 2025 Form 1040 expecting $2,140 and enters 2,140, without cents, in the IRS tool. On July 20, 2026 she files her Indian return for FY 2025-26, claims Rs 38,000, e-verifies the same day and checks View Filed Returns, planning only for the portal's 4 to 5 weeks.

Mistakes and cross-border traps

  • Typing cents or a software estimate into the IRS tool.
  • Treating one CRA figure as the rule.
  • Closing the bank account in a country you left before the refund arrives. We found no IRS statement about depositing to a foreign account, so ask before closing a U.S. account.
  • Leaving an Indian return unverified or the refund account unvalidated.

What we do

We handle the U.S. side: federal and Illinois returns, direct deposit set-up, refund tracking and IRS notices. We coordinate with your Canadian CPA and Indian Chartered Accountant, who file and track refunds there; we do not prepare Canadian or Indian returns. See individual tax return services, the tax questions hub and why a refund is different.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Where's My Refund? show no date?

Return Received carries no date; one appears at Refund Approved. In Illinois, Date not determined means the state is waiting on the Comptroller for 24 to 48 hours.

Which CRA timeline should I trust?

Use about 2 to 4 weeks online and 8 to 12 weeks on paper for returns received by the due date. None is a promise.

Can a Canadian or Indian refund go to my U.S. bank account?

Not on the rules we reviewed. Canada needs a Canadian account, and India a pre-validated Indian account.

Should I call the IRS?

Only if the tool tells you to. The IRS staff manual says research on an e-filed, direct-deposit return starts after day 21.
