Amended Returns by Country: 1040-X, Change My Return and India's Revised Return

Amended returns by country: how to correct a U.S. Form 1040-X, a Canadian T1 through Change my return or T1-ADJ, and an Indian revised or updated return.

Updated October 23, 2026 · 7 min read

Amended returns by country follow three different logics. In the U.S. you correct a return with Form 1040-X. In Canada you ask the CRA to change a return and it reassesses you. In India you file a revised return, and after that window closes an updated return with extra tax. Families with filings in more than one country should know which route fits each mistake, how long they have, and how a correction in one country forces a correction in another. This guide compares the three and covers the foreign-asset and foreign-tax-credit effects that usually go missed.

How do you amend a U.S. return?

The Form 1040-X instructions say you file the original return first and then amend it, using a separate Form 1040-X for each year. For a credit or refund, file within 3 years after the date you filed the original return (including extensions) or 2 years after you paid the tax, whichever is later; the refund is limited by a lookback period. You can file Form 1040-X with tax software to amend Forms 1040, 1040-SR and 1040-NR, and the IRS allows electronic filing for the current tax period and two prior ones. Allow 8 to 12 weeks and use Where's My Amended Return, which can take up to three weeks to show your filing.

Foreign tax credits have longer clocks. Form 1040-X instructions say a claim for a foreign tax credit, or a change from deduction to credit, must generally be filed within 10 years of the original due date for the year the tax was paid or accrued. IRS Publication 514 explains that when a foreign tax redetermination changes your credit (for example, India refunds tax), you notify the IRS through a Form 1040-X or Schedule C of Form 1116 on the proper date. If the correction concerns a foreign asset report, attach the missing Form 8938 or Form 8621 to the amended return; the FBAR is corrected in FinCEN's system, not on Form 1040-X. For late or missing international information returns the IRS has dedicated procedures, and the right one depends on the facts, so speak to a CPA before filing anything late. See our IRS foreign reporting penalties guide and FBAR guide.

Illinois. The IL-1040 instructions require Form IL-1040-X when you find an error or when the IRS adjusts your federal return; if the federal change gives a refund, wait for the IRS to accept it before filing the Illinois form.

How do you change a Canadian return?

The CRA says to wait for your notice of assessment before asking for a change. You can use "Change my return" in My Account (about two weeks), ReFILE in certified software, or Form T1-ADJ by mail (about 19 weeks). No refund is issued on requests made more than 10 calendar years after the end of the tax year. You cannot use a return change to apply for benefits, make or revise an election, or update personal information, and "Change my return" is not available for bankruptcy returns or certain international and non-resident returns. If you have unreported income or an unfiled T1135, the Voluntary Disclosures Program can give relief where the mistake is at least one year past its due date, and Form RC4288 is the written route to request penalty relief on the T1135. See CRA notices of reassessment and the voluntary disclosures guide.

How do you correct an Indian return?

The Income Tax Department's FAQ says the return for FY 2025-26 (AY 2026-27) falls under the Income-tax Act, 1961. A revised return can be filed before the end of the assessment year (the FAQ gives March 31, 2027 and marks it as proposed in the Finance Bill, 2026, so your Chartered Accountant confirms) or before assessment is completed, whichever is earlier. A belated return for AY 2026-27 can be filed until December 31, 2026. An updated return (ITR-U) can be filed after that, subject to the time limits in the Act: it cannot increase a refund or reduce tax, only one can be filed per year, and additional tax is payable. Under the Income-tax Act, 2025 the FAQ describes the updated-return window as 48 months from the end of the financial year succeeding the tax year, again marked as proposed in the Finance Bill, 2026. The department's foreign-asset guidance reminds taxpayers that omissions of foreign assets or income can be corrected by a revised return, using a form that includes Schedule FA (not ITR-1 or ITR-4). Intimation errors are handled through rectification.

Step by step: choose the right correction

  1. Write down what is wrong, which year and which country.
  2. Check the clock: 3 years in the U.S., 10 calendar years in Canada, the revised-return window in India.
  3. Decide the route (see the table) and gather proof.
  4. File the correction in the country where the error arose first.
  5. Update the other countries: Illinois, the U.S. foreign tax credit, FBAR, Form 8938, T1135, Schedule FA, Form 67.
  6. Keep copies, acknowledgement numbers and any notice.

Worked example

Meera, a U.S. resident in Aurora, finds in October 2026 that her 2025 return omitted $3,000 of NRO interest and that she never filed Form 8938 although her Indian and Canadian accounts exceed the threshold. Her fix: a Form 1040-X for 2025 adding the interest and a Form 1116 credit for the Indian tax, with Form 8938 attached; an FBAR check; and a matching IL-1040-X. Her sister in Mississauga had omitted a T4A slip, so she uses "Change my return" after her notice of assessment. Their uncle in Pune, an Indian resident, uses a revised return before March 31, 2027 to add Schedule FA. All details are hypothetical.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Amending the federal return but not Illinois.
  • Forgetting the foreign tax credit effect when India or Canada changes a tax figure.
  • Filing an Indian revised return on ITR-1 when foreign assets must be disclosed.
  • Waiting until a notice arrives. Corrections made before the tax authority contacts you are often treated more favourably, but this is never guaranteed.
  • Filing a late FBAR or international form without advice.

How we can help

We prepare Form 1040-X, IL-1040-X and late or corrected international reports for clients in Aurora and the Fox Valley, and we coordinate with your Canadian CPA and Indian Chartered Accountant so a change in one country is carried into the others. See our IRS and state tax representation and foreign account and asset reporting services. We cannot guarantee penalty relief.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to amend if the IRS has not noticed the mistake?

If you owe more tax, amending is usually the better course, and interest runs regardless. Ask a CPA about your specific facts.

Can I amend a Canadian return online?

Yes, using "Change my return" in My Account, subject to the exclusions the CRA lists.

Is an Indian revised return the same as an updated return?

No. A revised return replaces the original within a set window. An updated return is available later, but cannot reduce tax or raise a refund and carries additional tax.

Does amending stop the IRS from examining my return?

No. The IRS generally has 3 years from the date you filed to assess additional tax, and longer in some cases. See audit and assessment timelines.

What about errors on the FBAR?

The FBAR is filed on FinCEN's BSA E-Filing System. Corrections are made there, not on Form 1040-X; see our FBAR guide.
