Year-end tax planning 2026 is harder when you live between countries, because each tax system closes its books on a different calendar. This checklist covers what to finish in the United States, Canada and India before December 31, 2026, and what to prepare for January.
What belongs on your year-end tax planning 2026 list in the United States?
| Item | 2026 figure | Action |
|---|---|---|
| 401(k), 403(b), 457 deferral | $24,500; $8,000 catch-up at 50+; $11,250 at ages 60-63 | Raise payroll deferral before your last December paycheck |
| IRA | $7,500; $1,100 catch-up at 50+ | Contribute by the return due date |
| Standard deduction | $16,100 single; $32,200 joint; $24,150 head of household | Compare with itemizing before bunching gifts |
| Charity | $1,000 ($2,000 joint) for non-itemizers, new for 2026 | Give cash gifts to qualifying charities by December 31 |
| Foreign earned income exclusion | $132,900 | Check your physical presence or bona fide residence test |
| Annual gift exclusion | $19,000 per recipient ($194,000 to a non-citizen spouse) | Gift before year-end if intended |
Check your Form W-4 and your third-quarter estimate. To avoid an underpayment penalty, pay at least 90 percent of this year's tax or 100 percent of last year's, whichever is smaller; higher-income filers have special rules in IRS Publication 505. The IRS interest rate for individuals is 7 percent for the fourth quarter of 2026. For the dates, see the U.S. federal tax calendar.
Protect your identity: the IRS says to request an Identity Protection PIN before the online system closes in mid-November; it is generally available again in mid-January. Send money to India through bank-funded transfers where you can, because cash-funded transfers carry the 1 percent U.S. excise tax described in our 2026 US changes post.
What should you finish in Canada?
- RRSP: the 2026 dollar limit is $33,810; contributions made in the first 60 days of 2027 count for 2026.
- TFSA: the 2026 limit is $7,000. Remember that the TFSA, RESP and many Canadian funds have special U.S. treatment; see RRSP, RRIF, TFSA and RESP in the U.S..
- Instalments: the final 2026 instalment is due December 15.
- Capital gains: realize gains or losses by the last settlement date of the year, and remember that one-half of a gain stays taxable.
- T1135: total the cost of specified foreign property; the threshold is CAD 100,000. See T1135 foreign property reporting.
What should you finish in India?
- Advance tax: ask your Chartered Accountant (CA) whether a third instalment is due for tax year 2026-27 and under which Act.
- Belated returns: if an assessment year 2026-27 return is still outstanding, the window generally closes December 31, 2026, with a late fee and interest; confirm with your CA.
- AIS review: reconcile bank interest, dividends and foreign asset information that now appear in the Annual Information Statement.
- Foreign assets disclosure: if you have small undisclosed foreign assets, ask about the Foreign Assets of Small Taxpayers Disclosure Scheme, 2026 and its closing date.
- Remittances: plan Form 15CA and 15CB paperwork before moving NRO funds abroad; see Form 15CA and 15CB.
How do the three countries count your days?
- United States: the substantial presence test needs 31 days this year and 183 weighted days (all current-year days, one-third of last year's and one-sixth of the year before's).
- Canada: residential ties come first, and sojourning 183 days or more in a year can make you a deemed resident.
- India: residence turns on day-count tests, generally around 182 days, which your CA confirms for the year.
Keep a day-by-day travel log for 2026, because the three counts rarely agree. If the tests conflict, read residency tie-breaker across three countries.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reporting only year-end balances of foreign accounts; the FBAR uses the maximum balance.
- Mixing assessment year, tax year and financial year labels in India.
- Missing the U.S. estimated payment because a Canadian or Indian employer paid you.
- Making contributions for the wrong tax year.
