Recent and pending changes

  • March 1, 2025: the current two-year period began. The Code version we read is current to August 27, 2026.

The Pin-Before-Permit Check

  1. Check the address with the License Portal's address tool and note the property PIN.
  2. Test the three triggers (place, property, stock) and any exemption.
  3. Collect owner ID numbers, home addresses and shares; if an owner has no Social Security number, ask Revenue.
  4. Gather five years of wage-law history, the sales-tax allocation code and a plan.
  5. Apply on the portal, pay $40 and allow up to 30 to 45 days.
  6. Post the license and compare its dates with the County's period end.
  7. Line up occupancy, food or liquor approvals before opening.

Common mistakes

  • Treating a village, Chicago or collar-county address as unincorporated Cook.
  • Applying for this license while holding another County business license, or the reverse.
  • Signing the wage-law statement without checking earlier findings.
  • Using the old County FAQ's fee figures.

When to bring in an attorney

  • A violation notice, hearing, suspension or closure order.
  • A wage-law finding that may need a County Board exception.
  • Liquor or video gaming licensing, or a zoning dispute.
